The Ribbon Seal

The body length of adult animals is up to 1,8 m, the weight is up to 150 kg. Cubs are born up to 90 cm long and weigh up to 10,5 kg.

The ribbon seal is an inhabitant of the North Pacific, the Chukchi Sea and the Beaufort Sea as well.

The ration consists of plankton crustaceans – euphausiids (the ration of young animals), cephalopods and fish.

The breeding of the ribbon seal takes place on the ice from April to May, after that the animals are free to move in the water area, no longer bound by the boundary of the ice. They lead a solitary lifestyle.

The total number of species is estimated at 140 ths individuals.

The first mention of the ribbon seal on the Commander Islands can be found in L. Stejneger’s work (1896).

In the waters and on the coast of the Commander Islands ribbon seals are observed only occasionally. The last time the ribbon seal was seen on the Commander Islands was in 2002.
