Last Saturday, September 25, 2021, the sixth regional ecological festival Sea of Life was held in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky.
The festival had been traditionally held on Lenin Square, but this year the organizers moved away from the usual framework and moved the celebration to Khalaktyrsky beach.
The Association of Specially Protected Natural Areas of Kamchatka Krai and Kamchatka Specially Protected Natural Areas themselves has teamed up with the organizers of the Whale Trail Eco-Run and the Local's surfing school to create an active and educational site where everyone can find something to their liking.
The Commander Islands Nature Reserve together with Kronotsky Nature Reserve and the Volcanoes of Kamchatka Nature Park conducted Researchers of the Protected Lands Quest for children 7-14 years old. The participants learned to collect a real hiking backpack, climbed to the top of a volcano climbing wall, learned about the rules of behavior in protected areas, learned how to sort waste, met the members of Vitus Bering's expedition and made a souvenir with one of them. They identified marine mammals by their skeleton and seabirds by silhouette, and, of course, got acquainted with the unique objects of each protected area of Kamchatka.
Participants who collected all the marks in an individual route sheet received valuable prizes. Younger children received a book by Evgeny Georgievich Mamaev, Deputy Director for Science of the Commander Islands Nature Reserve - The Adventures of Toshka, a Little Steller Sea Lion. The older children received Whales and Dolphins encyclopedia by Suzanne Davidson as a gift. It was interesting to take part in the quest not only for children, but for adults as well. They completed all tasks with the same keen interest and received shoppers, mugs and other useful souvenirs.
Governor of Kamchatka Krai Vladimir Viktorovich Solodov became a guest of the quest as well. He visited some of the quest stations and even tried to identify marine mammals by their skulls together with the staff of the CINBR. In total, the Researchers of the Protected Lands Quest attracted about 200 participants.
The CINBR also organized a quiz dedicated to the Second Kamchatka Expedition. The author of the quiz is Natalya Aleksandrovna Tatarenkova, Head of the Historical and Cultural Heritage Preservation Department of the CINBR.
Residents and guests of Kamchatka turned out to be well informed and gave exhaustive answers to the quiz questions, for which they received a book by Vladislav Serov called Vitus Bering. The Great Northern Expedition
It seemed to us that the idea of holding Sea of Life thematic festival on the Pacific coast is a good experiment that can grow into a good tradition.
Thank you for being with us on Khalaktyrsky beach!
“Secrets of the Island. Severo-Zapadnoye Rookery"
Simultaneously with the events in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, the Sea of Life festival was held on Bering Island. Eleven brave children went on an ecological and educational expedition to Severo-Zapadnoye Rookery, where they learned to count marine mammals, look for and identify animals in the littoral zone, watched birds and collected plastic on the ocean shore. We will tell you more about the expedition in our Herald.
