The Reserve Cabin in Buyan Bay Switched to Autonomous Power Supply System

The reserve cabin on the shore of Buyan Bay completely switched to an autonomous power supply system with a total capacity of 1200 watts.

The system consists of four solar panels, a wind generator, batteries and an inverter. Green energy equipment was supplied to the Commander Islands Nature and Biosphere Reserve at the end of last year by Sorokoput Company. Solar panels were installed this winter, and for the installation of a wind generator we were waiting for suitable weather. The wind generator was installed at the end of May, and recently the reserve staff completed connecting to the cabin’s general power supply circuit.

The maximum power of the autonomous power supply system is almost twice the rate of the previously used gas generator. At the same time, two sources of alternative electricity work automatically and independently of each other. If one source fails, the second will replace it. Thus, state inspectors, researchers and tourists are stably and round-the-clock provided with electricity only from renewable sources - solar and wind energy.

This energy is enough to provide Internet connection, uninterrupted operation of energy-saving lamps, weather stations, charging batteries and household appliances. The gas generator is planned to be launched only for the use of power tools during repair work.

Reducing the consumption of gasoline will minimize the amount of harmful emissions into the atmosphere. The reserve staff also noted another advantage of green technologies - silence.

The Commander Islands is a place generously endowed with wind energy, and the intensity of sunshine is also high here. Of course, the future is about green energy on the islands, so it is importants not to be afraid to take these crucial for Nature steps.

The cabin on the shore of Buyan Bay is the entrance cabin to the buffer zone of the Commander Islands Nature and Biosphere Reserve. State inspectors spend their shifts here, scientists are based during field work, and tourists also stop when traveling to Komandor Bay or along the Path of the Pioneers.
