Month of Silence in the Commander Islands Reserve

From April 20 to May 20 the Commander Islands Nature and Biosphere Reserve organizes the Month of Silence. During this period some restrictions are imposed on visits to the buffer zone of the reserve. The main goal of this measure is to prevent animals from stressing during breading.

The Month of Silence is a traditional nature protection measure, which is conducted yearly on Bering Island. The goal is to minimize stress of animals in this important part of their lives. Within this month reindeers have calves, fur seals have pups, arctic foxes prepare their dens for the newborns and seabirds are ready for nesting. That is why the animals are especially fast to react to foreign smells and sounds. We have to exclude any stressing factor for them and provide maximum of their natural habitat.

Rangers of the reserve will see if the rules are followed by everyone, as they will be on permanent patrol during this period. Violations are followed by administrative responsibility under article 8.39 of Administrative Rights Codex – a fine from 3000 to 4000 roubles.

Protection of the Commander Islands nature is our common goal.
