Earth Hour on Bering Island

The Commander Islands now have an ecological trail, which has become the main tourist and educational attraction.

As part of the Earth Hour 2020 campaign, corporate partners and other supporters of WWF Russia managed to raise five million roubles for the implementation of important environmental projects. 3.3 million roubles of these funds were  used to complete the arrangement of the ecological trail and several platforms with benches off the Severo-Zapadnoye rookery of marine mammals on Bering Island.

Accessible Wild Land

Now every visitor to the Commander Islands Nature Reserve has the opportunity to observe the life of thousands of marine mammals and admire the beauty of the northern unpredictable nature.

The ecological trail is located only 20 kilometers from Nikolskoye - this is the nearest to the village major tourist attraction.

It has a number of paths and stairs, equipped with pedestrian wooden decks, which allows you to comfortably observe the animals at different heights.

Signs and information stands tell about the animals of the nature reserve. The most attentive travelers can spot not only pinnipeds, but also watch the hunting of killer whales, meet the eye with a family of arctic foxes running by, dream watching soaring glaucous-winged gulls, see flocks of cormorants and tufted puffins.

Ecotourism is becoming increasingly popular. It promotes knowledge and fosters a responsible attitude towards nature. Such ecological trails are one of the important components of ecotourism.

The creation of eco-trails allows you to preserve areas valuable to protected wildlife and to prevent any harm through careful acquaintance.  Trails like in Severo-Zapadnoye rookery, make it possible and safe to observe marine mammals even during the active formation of harems of the northern fur seal and sea lions. Thanks to the complex route of the eco-trail, the anthropogenic load on the environment is reduced and at the same time the trail is safe for both adults and children.

Come visit the CINBR to try our new trail!
