Celebrating the 280th Anniversary of the Commander Islands Discovery

As part of the celebration of the 280th anniversary of the discovery of the Commander Islands, the 195th anniversary of the founding of the village of Nikolskoye and the 340th anniversary of the birth of Captain-Commander V.Y. Bering, the team of the CINBR prepared a program of excursions, interactive events and workshops for residents and guests of Nikolskoye Village.

The excursion is conducted by Natalya Aleksandrovna Tatarenkova, the head of Historical and Cultural Heritage Preservation Department.

The excursion is conducted by Dmitry Pilipenko, senior researcher, head of the Scientific Department of the CINBR.

To register for an excursion, you must have a pass to the border zone and a permit to visit the territory of the reserve, which can be obtained in the Protection Department of the nature reserve.

Children under 16 can only visit the tour if accompanied by their parents.

The tour is subject to appropriate weather conditions.

11 September

11:00 - 14:00 We are waiting for adults and children in front of the Aleutian Museum of Local Lore to join our educational program

The programme includes:

Steller's Sea Cow interactive platform - we'll talk about the fragility of our world; remind about the disappeared animals that once lived on the Commander Islands; together we will make a life-size model of a sea cow.
Face painting "Animals discovered by Georg Steller" - we will speak about the animals discovered on Bering Island by Georg Steller; everyone can join by drawing your favorite animal of the Commander Islands on your own or with the help of the artist.
Second Kamchatka Expedition Interactive platform. Imagine that you are in 1733 ... Let's write together our wishes to the participants of the upcoming expedition. Maybe you want to warn them against something, wish them something or share your admiration. Write your message and leave it in the chest of time!
Vitus Bering's Team Workshop - together we will get to know the members of Vitus Bering's team and "try on" the fashionable clothes of that time. Participants of the workshop will be able to present themselves in the Bering team and make a commemorative badge. You can also try the role of Aleutian hunters and hold a real Aleutian throwing board and a beaver "arrow"!

18:00 Flash mob "Create a whale". Location: Lenin`s Square.

The humpback whale is up to 19 meters long! And it weighs about 50 tons! How many guests and residents of the island can “fit” in one humpback whale? Let's check it out together and then take a joint photo with the drone.

12 September

We invite guests and residents of the island to the Severo-Zapadnoye Marine Mammal Rookery (Cape North-West/Severo-Zapadny)

12:00 Start of the playground. The program includes fun games and educational activities. "Become a paleontologist": excavations, research, comparisons - an interesting experience under the guidance of an employee of the reserve. Together we make a children's souvenir badge. And also magic fairies have prepared a sweet surprise - each child will receive cotton candy.

13:30 Opening of the memorial site dedicated to the researchers of marine mammals of the Commander Islands and the monument to Georg Wilhelm Steller, the first naturalist and explorer of the Commander Islands

14:00 Excursion to Severo-Zapadnoye rookery of marine mammals. The excursion is conducted by the staff of the CINBR

The unique photo zone is available all day round. Don't forget to take a picture!

Guests of Severo-Zapadny Cape events will be offered hot tea and pastries, as well as an exclusive badge to commemorate the event.

After September 15, 2021, photos of the holiday can be downloaded on the website of the nature reserve and the district administration, you can also receive them on a flash card in Protection Department or in the souvenir shop in the Visitor Center. Until December 2021, together with the administration of the Aleutian Municipal District, we plan to publish a souvenir booklet about the holiday.

Work Afterwards

We would also like to inform you that the construction of the Scientists' Spot at Severo-Zapadnoye rookery is nearly complete and the third stage of the construction of the ecological trail (the stairs to the second observation deck and sections of the decking path between the observation platforms) is nearing completion as well.
